What most people do not take into account while optimizing their pages for Search Engines is the layout or design of the page in question. If you are serious about getting top places in popular search engines then you better take this factor very seriously.
Now we shall take an overall view of good page structure and its influence. We now know (considering you have read the previous articles) that Google and other similar top search engines that work on search algorithm similar to google are interested in your content and how you present them. The more prominent your key word positions on the page the more weightage will be given to you by the search engine spider. But most of the time our designs have to be attractive to woo the visitor and in these cases the use of images flash animation and html tables makes it difficult for the search engine bots to parse your text. More over some of your links to other pages in your site may not be considered at all. This way you loose page rank too.
How SE bots see and read our page content? Real world analogy.
Now we will do a comparative study of the of real world reading by humans with page reading by SE spiders. Let me tell you its a common and very effective practice among technology manufacturers to mimick real world and natural phenomena in their products. So the automated softwares that read our pages and Index then or Rank them are also built on the same line. They also tend to read the pages in the same way like we do.
Most of our languages are written and read from left to right (except some like Chinese, Arabic and Urdu) so its obvious why bots read your content from left to right. So fact one is the content on left is more important that those on right. Similarly we tend to write and read our sentenses from top to bottom of a page. Keeping this logic in view you should have got it by now that nearer the keyword is to the top of the pages the more weight it gets. So basicaly the weightage starts form the TOP LEFT and goes down decreasing to the BOTTOM RIGHT. Keep this in mind.
What is the best page design for on-page optimization.
Page structure commonly followed by designers
Now let me tell you what is lacking in this kind of structures. As it is visible in the image above the header area on top is the most prominent place of your page. We need to put our most important content here. But now its a trend among designers to make the header as attractive as possible. The result is that its mostly always full of pictures and flash animations. So we have hardly any place here to put text and if we do it doesnot look good. The best way to come around this is to put a graphic background and some designer text over it. Now there is another problem that comes up when we have multiplle pages in the website we need to have a common header that is the identity of the site. This is a tricky issue. I propose three different solutions to this problem.
1. Give no importance to the header at all. So this way the top area will be blanck and the search engine spider starts reading where the header begins. This can be done in another way too. Use javascript to display the header HTML content. This type of content processed and displayed using Javascript is avaided by SE bots/slurps. So finally what you get in eyes of the bots is your content placed directly at the top of the page.
2.Another approach by SEOs is to put the page's key words in alt tags for the header graphics. This may be a smart solution but needs to be done properly. It will be difficult to put header blocks customized in all pages. It is a real headache when it is a thousand pages to customize. If you are not aquainted with any server side programming language like PHP or ASP it time you learn one. Using PHP or ASP you can pre-program the header to take in the key word laced alt tag or css styled headers. The customized content to be used this way can be declared in the page as a string variable and the special header will pick it up.
3. If your header is a complete flash file then google search algorithm will read the content that are in text. For all other search engines like Yahoo Slurp and MSN bot you need a special Search Engine Optimization trick to tell the SE Bot about the content. This is called Flash SEO.
