Effect of Anchor Text in your link building. (Complete SEO link building tutorial - Part 2)

Now I will talk about sign boards. You would be curious why I am suddenly blabbering about signboards. Well when we are discussing roads we cant overlook signboards. Signboards are the ones that tell us which road leads us where. So in our Road - Links analogy what do signboards signify? Did you get it? Well they are the anchor texts. Mostly when we click some where it does not show us the URL we are about to visit. Rather it is mostly some text we click that takes us to another page. So I compare the anchor text to Signboards. The anchor text like sign boards do not show us the city. They either show us the name of the city or describe the best thing about the city like "the city of Cashinos". Now as a driver you will have to rely on the signboards to tell you where the road will take you. Similarly the visitors ( human or SE Bot) heavily rely on the anchor text to know what kind of page they are going to open when they click a link. So roads with no signboards are like a kind of trap. Imagine you are first timer on a small road and you see another small road diverging but with no sign boards. Will you dare to take the road? Same holds true for links without anchor texts. The search engine spiders do not bother to follow the links that do not have any anchor text. Mostly newbie developers or smalltime bloggers do this mistake. I have seen many experienced developers do this blunder too. What they do is make Image links to sites or pages. Image links without alt tags for Images are same as links with no anchor texts. Some times some over smart people dupe visitors with white space links. That is you click a sequence of white space smartly disguised with styles and that takes you to another site. Even this kind of links with white spaces as anchor text will be seen as roads without signboards and robots will neglect them. Worse than that there may be penalties for the site that carries the blank links too. You could be totally dropped form the Google index. When I say google it would mean all leading search engines like Yahoo, MSN and other organic search engines. Again misleading signboards are real headaches for a driver. Similarly misleading links are headaches for visitors too. So backlinks to a page that deals with cancer treatment will not benefit form a link from another page that shows in the anchor text "mickey mouse" unless there is some sinister connection between the two topics that I am not aware of. These kind of dupe links can negatively affect the Ranking of the site that it leads to. This is a black hat SEO approach. Its is an unethical way of going higher in SERP by bring your competitor down. But thats dangerous and not fair. I know that is what you are thinking at this point of time. If your business or site is facing problems like this then find the site that is linking to your site with wrong key words. First ask them politely to drop this tactic. If they do not respond to this then report the site to Google or Yahoo or MSN. This will make sure the criminal page and the whole site is sandboxed by search search engines.

The tutorial is not over yet. I prefer to deliver in packets that are small easily chewable, enjoyable and digestable. I will be adding more articles soon in this series of Link building tutorial.
