Hi Guys today we will be discussing linking strategies. Every one out there form Google to Grandpa tell us to get some links pointing to your site to get reputation in SERPs. Is it not like a thousandth time you have come across such sentences? If you are a new fighter in SEO arena I can understand your situation. You feel like a new driver on the road where you often get caught in traffic jams. Every one tells you to take the flyovers but no one tells you where exactly they are and how to get onto them. (what a stupid analogy; sorry could not find a better one) I am not your driving instructor and I am not an SEO guru yet. But I will take the pleasure of telling you how exactly to get to the flyover. Not only the flyovers but the undergrounds and short cuts as well. Stay tuned and fasten your seat belts. Lets go for a SEO ride.
I have compared Links in SEO with roads and driving. Well a link is just a road between two pages on the world wide web. If there are no proper roads or a great deal of congestion on them there is no doubt drivers have a bad time. So when you link to your page and link from your page to other pages you must make sure the links are good. This is to make sure the drivers on our roads have no problem driving on the roads or finding the roads or making a decision about choosing a road. Yeah yeah I know I did not tell you who the hell are the drivers. You would have guessed it though if a link is a road then a visitor that follows (clicks ) a link is a driver. When I say a visitor then it also includes Search Engine Spiders. In short they could be any human visitor or automated software like Google Bot, Yahoo Slurp etc that follows the links to move from one page to another on the huge WWW landscape. Both the type of visitors are equally important for our sites. Some time SEOs forget that outgoing links or outbound links are also an important parameter in SEO. Though backlinks or inbound links are very important; the outbound links should also be given some thought. Traffic on our roads will be good if there are many drivers moving on them. Mark the word moving. Yes good traffic is not only the number of drivers but the speed with which they move. So it is important that our roads should divert traffic to good localities through yet other roads. I guess too much of metaphors are making you dizzy.
We will now discuss the types of roads; I mean different types of links. When we analyze a particular type for link we will see their advantages and disadvantages. You can then decide for yourselves which links are are better than others. Again I will make use of the Road – Link analogy. There are mostly two kinds of roads. One way roads and two way roads. People prefer one way roads over two way roads. If there are one way roads pointing to a city then it shows the importance of the city. It looks like people do not want to come back from the city. The value of the city rises in public opinion. It holds true in case of sites that have one way links pointing to them. Google values these sites more. So lesson one we learnt today is that One way links are of a far greater value than reciprocal or two way links. A reciprocal links could be an outcome of an understanding between two web masters. This is not natural. On the other hand a lot of one way links to a site shows how important the site is because netizens are selflessly recommending it. It is not always easy to get one way backlinks to a web page. One particular thing we the SEOs make sure is that the page from which they are bringing a link back to their site/page should be relevant to the matter on the page. Say a link form a page about "Gay Marriages" will not have much value when pointing to a page about "Pentium 8" (dont ask me if pentium 8 is out yet... I am an AMD fan). But if the same page links to some news about "Governor Arnold passing a bill legalizing Gay Marriages" or to a page about "Lindsay and Samantha" then it would offer much more value.
